After a short meeting we heard from our area legislators regarding the upcoming session and bills coming up. House Majority Leader Lee Qualm, Representative Caleb Finck, Senator Rocky Blare and new Representative for District 19 Marty Overweg each spoke. After each legislator spoke, there was time for those in attendance to speak with each legislator to ask questions regarding upcoming legislations plus give ideas for bills needed.
My goal as new President of our organizations was to increase membership this year. As the new president, I started to call Republican friends at the end of 2019 inviting them to the first meeting of the year in January. I explained what our organization does, how much membership dues are and invited them to become members. I checked with the State President to see if all members must be from Charles Mix County. She informed me that since there are no county organization in any of the surrounding counties, they can join ours. Because of that, I also invited women from many of our surrounding counties. We went from about 6-8 attending meetings in 2019 to at our first meeting 28 including members, those interested in becoming a member, guests, and legislators who were in attendance. Before the State meeting on February 10thwe went from 16 members in 2019 to 51 paid members so far for 2020. Many young women, many businesswomen and many professional women have joined. Our organization has an entirely new face and new energy.
This upcoming year we will be looking at new projects, new activities and will work to engage the new members in areas they are interested in. There were 6 from our organization that attended the State meeting in February, including Trudy Qualm and Lois Van Dusseldorp and new members Jenna Veurink, Sara Munneke, Rachel Brondsema and Lisa Konechne.
April 25th we will have our Lincoln Day Dinner in Platte. Our organization will be setting up the event and taking care of all details of the event. I look forward to a great year!
